I recently acquired my first Transformers Masterpiece by Takara, it is the MP-01 Optimus Prime. This is the first of the Masterpieces and is to me still the best Masterpiece to date. This piece IS the definition of a Masterpiece mainly due to its size and diecast components. It just feels so solid and impressive when held. I am really glad I was able to acquire this piece in of Transformers history.
By the way, have any of our fellow toy collectors watch the show called "Collection Intervention" yet? It's a new series where a chick that is supposedly a toy appraiser and collector herself "intervene" to help out some collectors/borderline hoarders sort out and take control of their collections. I am sure the whole thing is scripted and I really don't watch it for her help, but to see the awesome collections from these collectors.
Although this show is largely scripted, it has influenced me a little even after watching just three episodes. It made me really stand back, take a wide look at my collection, and seriously consider which items I could do without. After pondering for a while, I took a bunch of toys that I decided I could do without, took some pictures of them, and threw them up on my local forums for sale.
From now on, instead of buying many small items here and there, I will try to save up for that one definitive piece that will stay in my collection forever.
I mean, having this Masterpiece Optimus Prime on display just gives me so much more satisfaction than all the deluxes I sold to pay for it.
I am on the fence with this guy, well the one with the trailer US release. 100 bucks? I never even opened my 25th Prime. Still an amazing toy. Also saw the Thundercracker masterpiece, wow, but $70 yikes. Yeah, its important to do collection reviews now and again. Its hard to let go of something you thought was totally awesome ten years ago, but now not so. Novelty wears off. blah blah, I talk too much.
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely correct! Although even now when I sell something, I always think I will regret selling it later down the road, but that feeling passes by when I think of what I can buy with the money now haha!
DeleteAs for the MP10 (the Prime with trailer for $100), that one is different than the MP1. The MP10 is a little smaller and mostly made of plastic, but as a result it is more articulated and balanced, it is also more cartoon accurate. I am contemplating on whether to get that one as well when it comes up here to Canada. Regarding Thundercracker, I want one of those molds, but I'd want Starscream over Thundercracker.
It is good that you rethink what and how you going to collect. I am having the same thoughts about my collection and I am holding back much more due to the fact the quality and the pricing does not match up. It is hard to see details on toys as well as durability.
ReplyDeleteHaha actually one of the factors that led me to rethink the collection is due to your writeup on the decline on quality and increase in price. That just made me rethink exactly why I am buying these deluxes are Hasbro/Takara at these ridiculous prices. So far I've already sold the Takara Prime stuff that I actually just bought a month or so ago, luckily at no loss. I am probably not going to buy Hasbro deluxes from now on, if anything I will only buy Takara ones if they have nicer paint apps.
DeleteI am glad my sharing did some impact. I will for now go buy Hasbro as it is still the most value for money and although lack of paint, it is for my child pleasure as he now like to request those toys on display to play with such as the Transformers. LOL I will still rethink and think again before buying any toys tho. LOL
DeleteLove that Prime! And i hear you about saving up and buying those larger pieces for your collection because am starting to get in to this mode of wanting to get all my Holy Grail piece i want for my collection(Which i have 2 already)so am starting to slow down abit on my week/monthly spending to do so but am weak so am sure i will have a few odds and ends slip in on the cheap too lol.
ReplyDeleteHaha yes grails are sooo much more satisfying, but they take time to reach and hence that's where all the little tiny pieces come in LOL! Like before I did this rethinking, I've already have a bunch of stuff pre-ordered from Japan that lasts up to end of this year. I looked over them and luckily there aren't too many "Why did I buy this!?" items. An example would be the Takara Gaia Unicron from the Prime series that I just paid for (Amiami doesn't like preorder cancellations), but I am also selling my whole TF Prime collection LOL. Hopefully I can just sell it for the money I paid when it comes.
DeleteAhh, he looks KILLER! Collection Intervention? No way :D
