I recently picked up a cheap Nikon AF-D lens, the 28-70 f3.5-4.5.
I just needed a zoom lens to cover this range that's not too expensive since I rarely shoot in this range (other than toy photography). But it's nice to have when I need it. Anyways, I was testing out the sharpness of this lens today and found it performs surprisingly well.
On the wide end and wide open (28mm f3.5), the images are a bit soft. Too soft for my liking, but stop it down to 5.6 and above and it's sharp all the way. Almost all consumer lenses are soft when wide open so it's not a surprise to this lens as well. Although I found that at 70mm and wide open (f4.5), the image is sharp enough that it is usable.
This lens is also a semi macro lens throughout the whole range, so it looks like I will be using this a lot for my toy photography.
Shot wide open at 70mm, f4.5.
Nice! Everything is crisp and detailed.
